This Companion provides scholarly (and pastorally sensitive) comment on all the items in TIS. Most of the material in Wesley Milgate's companion to AHB I, Songs of the People of God, and also from his Companion to Sing Alleluia, has been repeated, with amendments and additions where necessary. (Milgate constantly worked on revising his material until his death in 1999, just after the publication of TIS.)

Commentary on the new material is provided by D'Arcy Wood, who was not only a member of the editorial committee of all three hymnbooks but has inherited Milgate's material, and in addition has mined many basic resources such as John Murray's Dictionary of Hymnology and the Companions to Congregational Praise and the United Methodist Hymnal.

Part I of this Companion consists of commentaries, seriatim, on all the items in the hymnbook. Part II consists of brief biographies of writers of text and composers of tunes - 705 entries in all.

A very useful addition to the already extremely voluminous indexes of TIS is an Index of Common Titles, where it is possible to track down hymns or songs which have a common title different from the first line.

Every member of the clergy and every church musician should have one!
