This book, which is written in the style of the Narnia series, concerns two children, Georgie and Thomas, who are swept into a magical world and have to perform great acts to help save the world and learn about themselves. This world is peopled with a kindly magician, trees that throw fruit, giants and talking animals, including a number of excitable armadillos and a bat that gives advice.

The Ancient Machine is the second in a trilogy and a sequel to The Magician's Daughter; however the new reader will be able to catch up quickly, as all is explained in chapter one. The characters speak in a language well known to children and there are even a few (very polite) bottom jokes.

This book is most suitable for 12 year olds.
