90 Minutes in Heaven
Don Piper with Cecil Murphey, Koorong Books

We all have our own interpretation of Heaven. These interpretations are gleaned through books, texts, sermons and, above all, through our Bible.

Why do we then have this yen to know about this mysterious yet much talked about "paradise?" Simply because it is a one way street on which those who travel never return to speak about their experience.

Many, therefore, have jumped at the chance to hear or read about the "first hand" experience of the Rev. Don Piper of the First Baptist Church in Pasadena, Texas, who died and experienced "heaven" for 90 minutes before being sent back to his earthly body.

Returning to his earthly body was by no means an easy journey for Piper who, after a horrific car accident, endured 34 operations, 105 days in hospital, 13 months confined to bed, deep depression, anger and anxiety, and the pain-ridden device known as the "Ilizarov" frame -- not to mention the fact that "pain" has been a constant companion and will no doubt be till he returns to the place he has longed for since his privileged glimpse of Heaven.

Reading the book will no doubt satisfy many folks' curiosity of Heaven, will waylay anxiety about death and the hereafter, bring comfort to those who have lost a loved one and confirm the expectations of those who believe in our Heavenly Father and Heaven.

While he can only guess at God's reason for returning him to earth and while he has been and is prepared to carry out his good works on earth, Piper's experience has fuelled his desire to return to this heavenly paradise.

Aside from the wonderful detailed description of Heaven, the book also deals with the medical aspects of recovery, the specialists and medical team, relationship issues with loved ones, church members, the public in general and Piper's battle with his own stubbornness in relinquishing his independence and learning to accept help from others.

A thoughtful, educational and inspirational book ... another that I will no doubt re-read, savour and treasure.
