47 of the world’s poorest nations have committed to be entirely green energy sufficient at the latest between 2030 and 2050.
Haiti, Tuvalu and Bangladesh are just a few of the countries that will follow the plan called Marrakech Vision. The plan includes promises that each of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) members will strive to produce domestic renewable energy and work to end energy poverty.
The announcement was made at the end of the Marrakech climate conference last week.
Trump Factor
The climate conference took a turn when Donald Trump succeeded in securing the US presidential election. Country representatives at the conference became weary due to Trump’s previous comments stating he would stop US federal money going towards global warming initiatives.
This could see the US pulling out of the landmark Paris climate agreement that was signed by 195 countries in December 2015. The agreement highlights the need and the commitment of the signatory countries to ensure a susainable future by working to keep the global warming limit to well below 2°C .
The not so cold North Pole
Just last week, it was reported that the North Pole is worrying 20°C (36°F) warmer than usual. The Artic is seeing a record low of sea ice covering the polar ocean. This is the result of uncharacteristic warm weather blowing into the Artic since the start of October.
Response in hope
The Pacific Islands are already feeling the impact of climate change with rising sea levels and warmer waters, which have contributed to land loss and affected fish supplies. In response to Trump’s promise to disrupt global warming initiatives, Pacific Islanders from Talanoa have responded not in condemnation but in hope.
